Seven St. Joseph, Mo., Locations to Participate in National Manufacturing Day Events on Oct. 7, 2016

MFG Day LogoOn Oct. 7, 2016, dozens of cities around the nation – including St. Joseph, Mo. – will officially recognize the contributions and advancements made possible by careers in manufacturing. National Manufacturing Day will feature more than 800 events happening simultaneously across the country to showcase careers across the manufacturing sector. Each event is designed to inspire the next generation of students to pursue jobs and training in this diverse field.

The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce announces the promotion and coordination of seven local events to celebrate the day on Oct. 7, 2016.  “Many high school students and parents may have misperceptions about what jobs in manufacturing are like,” says Kristie Arthur, Director of Workforce Development, St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce. “Our goal for taking part in national Manufacturing Day efforts is to help share truths about these creative, highly-skilled jobs in our city. We hope to educate young people on the career opportunities available right in St. Joseph through manufacturing.”

As a state, Missouri has been named the sixth best in the nation for its annual advanced manufacturing industry job growth in a recent report from the Brookings Institution. Locally, St. Joseph manufacturing companies have a history of offering career options that are diverse and lend themselves well to promotion and leadership. St. Joseph is ranked as one of the top 100 manufacturing locations in the United States by Area Development magazine.
Careers in manufacturing include jobs in robotics, computer-based technology, engineering and many other fields. “While many high school graduates plan on continuing their academic careers in college, manufacturing jobs often offer salaries that may be as high as what a college graduate can earn in their first year after graduation,” says Arthur. “Manufacturing Day helps increase awareness about these highly-skilled, high-paying careers available at local companies right here in St. Joseph.”
Not only can families benefit from learning about the types of positions and training that are available at St. Joseph manufacturing sites, they can also learn about the highly-desired skills employers are seeking. “Promoting these local Manufacturing Day events is a crucial step in the process of assisting St. Joseph’s up and coming workforce to find fulfilling careers that they might not otherwise have considered,” said R. Patt Lilly, President and CEO, St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce. “Our local manufacturers are always looking for talented, motivated individuals to help them reach company goals, and Manufacturing Day is helping them achieve just that. For students who can learn quickly, think creatively and enjoy working with both their hands and their head, careers in local manufacturing have never been brighter.”
