Herzog Services Inc. is currently looking for a Field Mechanic in St. Joseph, MO. The Field Mechanic supports the day-to-day operations of our fleet of highly specialized rail testing vehicles and equipment. Extensive U.S and Canada travel required. Previous mechanical background and training is preferred but we will provide paid training to the right candidate. Herzog offers a competitive salary and benefits package.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Test, troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair issues related to electrical, diesel mechanics, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
Day to day tasks vary, regularly dispatched to field locations.
Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.
Conduct preventative maintenance on all current railroad test equipment.
Handle service calls relating to the operations of the railroad test equipment
Keep a clean and productive work environment
Able to weld
Assist in maintaining existing ultrasonic equipment
Verify test vehicles serviceability by conducting inspections (Mobile inspection, Hyrail)
Provide all hand tools
Extensive travel (relocation is not required)
Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
Be on-call and prepared to travel at moment’s notice.

High School Diploma or GED
Must be at least 21 years of age.
Valid Chauffer Driver’s License with a good driving record.
Ability to be DOT certified.
Must have a valid Passport.
Must be able to travel and be willing to work extended and off hours.
Basic math skills and mechanical aptitude
Experience with hydraulics, heavy equipment repair, and pneumatics.
Problem solving and decision-making skills.
Knowledge of industry safety practices.
Ability to interpret mechanical and electrical drawings/blueprints
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing using the English language.
Ability to work in a team environment
Must be self-motivated and a quick learner
Industry experience is a plus

Pre-Employment Requirements:

Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
Maintain valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle.
Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements for this position.

Exposure to outside/inside environments, medium lighting and high noise levels.
Exposure to all weather conditions including extreme cold, snow and rain.
Will be required to bend, stoop, stand, and climb in performing daily tasks and activities.
Required to wear safety apparel and equipment while performing job duties.
Must be able to lift components from the ground to shoulder height that can weigh up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to ascend and descend the side and back of the truck where the first step can be 24 inches off the ground.
Must be able to squat or kneel and stay in that position for 5 minutes.
Must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. of weight 20 feet.
Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces.
Must be able to hold 8 lbs. test wheel, while kneeling, with arms extended out in front of you for 10 seconds.
Must be able to grasp or squeeze various equipment and tools requiring forces up to 50 lbs. up to 25 times per hour.
Must be able to ascend a ladder 4 steps with a first stop of 18 inch up to 25 times a day.
Lift a 50 lbs. battery from the ground to chest height and horizontally transfer it 4 ft.
Must be able to look to their right and left sides, turning their necks for a total of 180 degree of movement several times per hour.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Hyrail Wheel off ground to waist level.
Carry a weight of 50 lbs. a distance of 10 feet.
Able to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow; hear and distinguish auditory signals
