Job Description Serving as an Assistant or Associate Professor (non tenure-track) with Missouri Western State University, the primary responsibilities for the university include recruiting string students, teaching applied lessons, conducting the orchestra and coaching chamber music, and performing in the faculty piano trio. The successful candidate will be a collaborative educator who develops an active schedule of recruitment and interaction with the string music education community while establishing a regional reputation as an effective teacher and conductor. The Music Director and Conductor of the Saint Joseph Symphony is responsible for the artistic vision and development of the orchestra. In addition to conducting the concert season (four full orchestra concerts and three children’s concerts), the Music Director will facilitate programming for the winter and summer chamber music series (three concerts each). The conductor also collaborates with university faculty in organizing the Instrumental Infusion, a two day event introducing children to instruments of the orchestra. The successful candidate will promote the Symphony as an asset to the cultural life of the region, developing a strong network with music educators in the community. Duties associated with this position: determine programming and number of rehearsals, oversee the audition/ hiring/ dismissal of musicians, select principal players and guest artists, plan the concert season (including, but not limited to, concerts for subscription, pops, education, and special themes/ events), and develop/ sustain the performance quality of the orchestra. Required Qualifications Masters in music with significant professional experience in conducting. Experience leading a university-level orchestra program. Main performance instrument should be violin, viola or cello with expertise in teaching upper or lower strings. Demonstrated ability to sustain and grow a university orchestra program, including evidence of successful recruitment. Strong communication and leadership skills. Preferred Qualifications Terminal degree and/or artist level conductor.
