Entertainment can be found year-round in the city of St. Joseph. From biking, walking, or playing sports along the city’s parkway system to indoor musicals, plays, and concerts, St. Joseph offers a wide range of entertainment.
For those who love the outdoors, St. Joseph’s beautiful hills, trees and river provide both a soothing and adventurous place to get outside and explore. Spring and summer days can be enjoyed by swimming, ice skating, walking, biking or playing tennis, golf, or baseball within one of the 48 parks along the city of St. Joseph’s 26-mile parkway system.
Others might enjoy music along the parkway once a month during the Parties on the Parkway. Summer’s heat can be quenched in the St. Joseph Aquatic Park’s lazy river, zero-entry pool, or diving area.
The Remington Nature Center and Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) interpretive center offers “wild” indoor and outdoor activities. Just outside the door of the Remington Nature Center, the banks of the Missouri River offer boating access and fishing opportunity. A 2-mile long paved trail allows explorers to keep their feet dry and bike or walk along the shore that brought a French fur trapper to found this town. The MDC offers both rustic bluff-side hiking trails in the city of St. Joseph and an urban conservation area to explore the wild within the center of the city.
Football fans can enjoy watching the Kansas City Chiefs play football at their sports training camp at Missouri Western State University (MWSU), while baseball fans can enjoy the St. Joseph Mustangs play in historic Phil Welch Stadium. In the heat of summer, when you start to wish for some snowflakes again, you can glide across the ice at the Bode Ice Arena, right next door to the stadium, and brush up on your figure eights or score a goal with skating or hockey classes.
The arts are strongly supported in St. Joseph and offer multiple festivals, plays, musicals, and concerts. In evenings, residents can relax in the beautiful 1920-era Missouri Theater and listen to St. Joseph’s own professional symphony orchestra or they can choose to relax down the street in their own chairs on the Felix Street Square every Friday during the summer with some jazz, rock ‘n’ roll, or bluegrass. The Robidoux Resident Theatre, MWSU, and other organizations offer several musicals and plays throughout the year.
The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art and events like Art in the Park, Trails West!® festival, and the Coleman Hawkins Jazz Festival also help the arts flourish in the city of St. Joseph.
St. Joseph is proud of its history and offers many educational opportunities to learn about the city on the river. The Pony Express, Patee House, National Military Heritage, and Glore Psychiatric museums, along with historic Mt. Mora Cemetery all have tales to share about St. Joseph’s past.
